CHATTON

Good numbers of fish feeding on the top

FISHING has been mixed at Chatton Trout Fishery, Northumberland, this week due to the warm weather.

There have been good numbers of fish feeding on the top but they have been extremely fussy about what flies they are taking.

Anglers among the fish included Tom Russell (Snr) from Earlston who caught 16 fish on small dries; Rob Frame from Denton who caught 14 fish on a Shipman's; Peter Brack from Ashington who took 11 fish on small Buzzers; Ray Barrett from Bedlington who caught nine on a Fritz; John Allan from Ashington who caught eight on dries and Buzzers; S Younger from Blyth who also brought eight to the net on a Mini Cat's Whisker; and Derrick Brown from Pegswood who caught seven on Buzzers.

SWEETHOPE LOUGHS

Neil back among the fish at Loughs

NEIL Urwin from Barrasford was back among the fish at Sweethope Loughs, Northumberland, landing no fewer than 20 fish all to Kate McLarens on the surface while Jim Lumsden from Cramlington, also fishing Katies, had 11.

Dave Parker from Wallsend safely returned 12 fish while Alan Shepherd from Stakeford, fishing Bibios, caught 11 fish and lost several more.

Boat anglers B Vickers and G. Maddison from Chopwell caught 24 fish on dries while J White  and E Bell from Chester-le-Street had 12 all on Daddies.

When the winds pick up, fish are dropping just below the surface so sticking with a floating line and a team of wet flies and weighted nymphs should be enough to tempt the trout.

The winner of the weekly draw from the completed returns forms was I D parker from Wallsend who wins a full day's sporting ticket.

For further information please contact Rob Tait at the fishery on 01830 540349.

Best Flies: Muddlers, Daddies, Hoppers, Sedges, Bibios, Katies, CdC patterns, small black dries and wets.

NAWORTH

Steady catches as rain freshens lake

CATCHES have been steady all week at Naworth where the rain has refreshed the lake and brought the water level back to normal.

The best fish of the week was 7lbs, but quite a few fish in that range were landed.

Fly anglers struggled at times but J McNeill managed the best catch of 22 mainly to a Black Fritz while worm also produced good, consistent sport.

The weekend rod average soared to 10, with plenty of fish surface feeding and it is hoped that this will continue into next week.

JUBILEE LAKES

Quieter week in a fantastic summer

A QUIETER week by far at Jubilee Lakes in what has been, up until now, the best summer's fishing at the lakes for years.

That doesn't mean it has always been easy but it certainly has been a good summer with some of the best hatches we have seen for quite a while.

Fishing was slower this week - perhaps due to the thunderstorms and heavier weather.

With plenty of trout rising small dry flies have worked well and so have daddies and hoppers. Buzzers have been very effective together with the occasional Bloodworm. The Damsel, Dawson's Olive and Olive Zonker have also worked well.

WASKERLEY

Ross is top rod with 15 trout

TOP angler at Waskerley this week was Ross Taylor of Sunderland with a total of 15 fish on a variety of traditional flies while Ian Colbourne from Shotley Bridge had seven on Hoppers, including a lovely 3lb brownie which was carefully returned.

Many anglers had six in a session including Dan Sefton from Burnopfield, Paul Sinclair, Steve Holmes and J Stokoe.

The best bags have been with dries on the calmer days with Hoppers, Sedgehogs, Bibio Bumbles and F Flies the best. Small size 14 wets fished just under the surface have also scored with Hare's Ear, Pheasant Tail Nymph and Snipe and Purple doing well.

Day tickets can be booked by calling Graham on 07759 431731.

WITTON CASTLE LAKES

Damsels dominate afternoon fishing

WITTON Castle Lakes continue to fish well with the South Lake still the pick of the bunch.

Afternoon fishing has been dominated by Damsel Nymphs twitched along slowly and fairly deep while everything changes heading towards evening with Daddies and Klinkhammer patterns bringing the fish to the net.

The new bait lake has been attracting a lot of attention with rods averaging six fish per visit.

Darlington's S Adamson, age 14, had a day to remember, taking fish of 13lb and 8lb on a Black and Green Fritz, enlisting the help Witton regular Bernie McEwon to bring the second fish to the net.

Durham rod W Everitt landed a tagged fish from the West Lake to win a bottle of whisky.

Bishop Auckland's Steve Allinson was delighted to double hook up on Buzzers until the fish fought in opposite directions and snapped him.

Steve returned a couple of days later sporting a brand new - and expensive - fly line. This time he hit into one of Witton's "big fish" estimated at 20+lb.

The fish run off across the big East Lake, taking Steve's reel right down to the backing before they parted company. When he reeled in the slack line his new fly line was missing.

At the time of writing  neither fish nor line have been seen again.

KNITSLEY MILL

Father and daughter do well at Knitsley

FATHER and daughter ticket Roy and Sharon Bainbridge brought a total of 20 fish to the net, the best at 6lb, on Hare's Ear at Knitlsey Mill where the rod average this week was 4.2.

Top rod this week was Chris Turner who, over two visits, landed 16 trout including fish of 9lb 8oz and 8lb 8oz on Damsels.
