SHARPLEY SPRINGS

Alan returns two nice Sharpley brownies

FOR the third week in a row at Sharpley Springs, Wednesday had a blast of mildness that brought much-improved Buzzer sport.

From mid-morning onwards Black Buzzers, especially size 14s, either drifted traditionally or suspended under indicators resulted in numerous good trout.

As the hatches abated, Pinky Bloodworms took over as the main quarry although a suitably tweaked black lure also took fish.

Pulled worms - particularly at the downwind pegs on mild days - remain effective and blob fishers can always rely on a fish or two.

Wade Brown from Tynemouth safely returned a 12lb 8oz rainbow trout on a Black Buzzer; Alan Woods from Seaham safely released two naturalised Sharpley brown trout; and Brian Conman from Crook brought 14 to the net.

Other anglers who recorded good catches included Jimmy Johnson from Bolton whose bag included one of 6lb 2oz; Bob Milne from Whitley Bay who started his day off with a hard-fighting 12lb 2oz rainbow using a Festoe Nymph; and John Stema from Ryhope who had a 12-pounder on a Green/Blue Damsel.

Best Flies: Black Buzzer, Pinky, Yellow Worm, Black Zonker, Two-tone Blobs.

CAISTRON LAKES

Season ticket to cover lakes and rivers

CAISTRON Lakes, Northumberland, will stay open as long as possible throughout the winter until forced to close by the weather.

A season ticket covering the lakes and brown trout and salmon angling on the fishery's stretch of the River Coquet is to be introduced next season.

Priced at £500 - a saving of £300 - the season ticket will cover 20 days on the lakes, 10 days' river fishing for brown trout and 10 days river fishing for salmon.

However, the fishery management team is willing to be flexible and will tailor the ticket to suit anglers' needs - cutting down the days on the lake for more salmon fishing, for example, or allowing anglers to fish half days instead of full eight-hour sessions.
