CAISTRON LAKES

Bill lands 40lb-plus bag in four hours

MORPETH angler Bill Potter was top rod Caistron Lakes, Northumberland, this week landing two fish of more than 10lb, one at 8lb and two of more than 4lb along with a stockie on Montanas in a four-hour session while Teesside rod John Watson, fishing a Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear, brought a fish of 14lb 8oz to the net and Harry Edwards returned eight to 6lb on Muddlers.

Best Flies: Muddlers, Hoppers, small lures, Buzzers, Corixa.

SHARPLEY SPRINGS/WATER

Superb dry fly sport in the evenings

THE evenings at Sharpley Springs/Water are superb for dry flies with the Hare's Ear family coming into its own along with sedge.

Alan Todd from Ryton safely returned a 15-pounder taken on a Black Fritz and Olive Buzzer while Richard Landsbury from Hartlepool brought 22 to the net on various patterns.

After a shower, small midge appeared like clockwork and rose a trout or two. Small and black - like the tiny beetles that continue to fall on the humid days. These have the stock feeding selectively at times and require black foam imitations with the tiniest of proportions. Small gnats and spiders have been second best.

Damsel and dragonfly activity can still be intense and the good old Damsel Nymph remains a fine go-to pattern.

A pulled invicta takes some beating when sedge are on the menu - and the same fly can be deadly static with a ginked-up wing.

Best Flies: Black Foam Beetle, Black Gnat, Black Spider, Black Buzzer, Hare's Ear Shuttlecock/Shipman's, Damsel, Invicta, Blobs.

LOCKWOOD BECK

Mark and John continue to land double-figure bags

At Lockwood Beck,
152 Anglers have caught 490 rainbows to 11lb 5oz and seven browns to 3lb to the net for a weekly average of 3.3 with 159 rainbows kept at an average weight of 2lb 4oz.

Bank anglers enjoyed good sport. Dave Sanders caught 11 on a really big CdC Shuttlecock from the top of the moorside. Juniors Lewis Wright and Sam Russell caught eight on Dawson's Nomad from the point.

Mark Walker caught 21 rainbows and one brown on a small Cat's Whisker fished under an indicator, finding fish at nearly all the places he fished on his way around the lake.

Mark has caught 490 fish from the bank over 26 visits for very impressive rod average of 18.

Walter Behrens caught seven from the moor side on size 12 Olive Klinkhammers. A Clark caught 12, keeping four for 13lb, from the point. Simon Purves had a good day from the top of the moor side, catching nine rainbows on Olive Klinkhammers and Shuttlecocks.

Alan Byfield fished from 3pm to 8.30pm and caught 12 rainbows to 6lb and a brown of 3lb, keeping three for 13lb. He fished from the point and caught most of his fish on a Damsel fished on a 20ft leader.

John McGarrell caught nine rainbows on Damsel's and Shuttlecocks from the wood side boat jetty and overflow end of the dam.

Billy Wilson caught a fully fined 11lb 4oz rainbow from the point on a size 14 Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear.

Boat anglers were also among the fish.

John McGarrell followed last week's 22 with 31 this week, all caught on size 16 Olive CdC Shuttlecocks fished in the calm water out from the holly bush and culvert.

John has now caught 423 fish, most on dries and nymphs, over 26 visits for a rod average of 16.

P Blight caught 12 and Tim Grove 11 on dries. Les Davison caught 12 rainbows and a brown on Monday, followed by 19 rainbows on Thursday. Les caught most of his fish on Olive Zonkers fished on an intermediate line.

SOUTH LINDEN

Evening sessions popular with anglers

THE Fly Lake at South Linden Trout Fishery, Northumberland, has been fishing extremely well throughout the day with fishermen taking advantage of the clear water to land and release good numbers of rainbows and blues.

The evening session at the fishery, when the water is cooling down, is proving to be very popular with a £5 sporting ticket available to those anglers who arrive before 6pm.

Good numbers of rainbows and blue trout have been caught on the bait lake mainly on worms and maggots fished either with ledger or bobble floats. Most anglers have taken full bags.

Anglers can check the fishery's website at http://www.southlindenfishery.org/ for up to date bookings, conditions and what's catching.

Best Flies: Black Buzzer, Black Nymph, Damsel, Bloodworm.
